Employee commuting emissions calculator

A quick estimate of what employee commuting looks like for a workplace of your size: car trips per year, parking spaces in daily use, and CO2. Every figure comes from public factors and is marked [E] for estimate. The calculator shows the size of the question. It cannot show your actual numbers, because nobody has measured them yet. That is what a baseline survey is for.

How the estimate is calculated

Every figure comes from the inputs below, nothing else. Nothing here is measured at your workplace, which is exactly why the result is an estimate.

  • Share of commutes made as a car driver, the Netherlands: 0.49 [E]. Source: CBS ODiN 2023, trips to and from work.
  • Fleet average emission factor, the Netherlands: 0.190 kg CO2 equivalent per vehicle kilometre, well to wheel [E]. Source: co2emissiefactoren.nl, maintained by Rijkswaterstaat and Stichting Stimular.
  • Working days per year: 220. Office attendance factor: 0.7. Parking factor: 0.9, since not every car driver present parks at the site on a given day. Assumed distance per trip: 15 km, a stated assumption rather than a measured value.
  • No absence figure is shown for the Netherlands. There is no official Dutch rate for what a day of absence costs, and we do not fill a gap with another country's number.
